Environmental Conditions

Environmental conditions, or the quality and state of the environment, are an inescapable part of daily life that can impact health. Environmental conditions such as water quality, air quality, and weather often vary among populations and geographic locations. While many conditions of the environment are naturally occurring, the quality and impacts of the environment are often affected by historical, economic, and sociopolitical factors.

Environmental conditions are a crucial social determinant of health as many communities are being impacted by the increasing industrialization and advancements in society. Factors such as air quality, clean water and sanitation, climate/temperature, and occupational exposures are all environmental conditions that can affect the health of a given population. According to the Pan American Health Organization, 13% of deaths in the Americas are linked to environmental risks (PAHO, 2023). Thus, the severity in which these environmental conditions leave certain communities more vulnerable to health disparities is worth addressing.

Key Points and Resources

Air Pollution

Air pollutants is linked to 100,000-200,000 deaths in the United States every year (Tessem et al, 2019)

What is Framer?

Free N-95 masks

Water Pollution

In many healthcare settings, the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among patients are inadequate sanitation and hand hygiene due to a lack of access to clean water. This is typically caused by the contamination of the water supply, specifically from lead, due to industrial waste products, corrosion of outdated lead-based materials, and improper water sanitation methods (World Medical Association, 2020).

Federal Acts

Gaining access to clean and affordable drinking water

Certified laboratory for public water system contaminant testing

Lead Poisoning

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) agree that any level of lead exposure is unsafe and toxic for everyone (Mulvihill, 2023).

Being aware of factors such as the temperature, flooding, and air quality index as shown on the weather app and channel can drive patients to take corresponding protective measures
